Ashdale Secondary College identifies, acknowledges and fosters its students’ strengths. To embrace this philosophy, the College offers a Netball and Soccer Academy that encourages students’ passion, commitment and skill in Physical Education.

Students in each Academy have the desire and commitment to improving their skills, gameplay and fitness to excel within the sporting arena. They proudly represent Ashdale Secondary College and are positive ambassadors for their Academy and the College.

Students within the Academy will focus on their chosen sport for two sessions of Physical Education each week. They will have the opportunity to build on their passion for the sport through the development of skills, fitness, strategies, tactics and officiating. Throughout the program, students have exposure to coaching experts and guest speakers, opportunities to attain coaching and umpiring qualifications and work with younger athletes from the cluster primary schools.

The focus of each Academy is not only on physical skills but the development of social and interpersonal skills, the sense of belonging to a team and the Ashdale Community.

Students are given various opportunities in each Academy, including team-building days, College representation at national sporting events and international tours.

If students progress into Senior School, they will be involved in the Specialised Sport Science program in Year 10, creating the foundations of a career pathway in the Sport and Recreation Industry. Year 11 students
will complete the nationally recognised qualification of a Certificate II in Sport and Recreation with a focus on either Soccer or Netball.

Netball Academy

Students selected in the Netball Academy in Years 7 – 9 will partake in two weekly lessons, providing them with skill and gameplay development sessions to enhance their macro-level understanding of netball further whilst complementing their community competitions.

In Year 10, students will engage in two additional sessions to those in Years 7-9, focussing on the theory aspect of human movement and its relevance to netball and preparing students to engage in Senior School Physical Education courses successfully.

Students will engage in the following:

  • All year groups in the Netball Academy compete in the School Sport Western Australia State Championships (SSWA) day carnival. Winners of this carnival will then proceed to the Fremantle Elimination Carnival to compete against the best schools in WA.
  • Years 7 and 8 students compete in the Multi-Cultural Day Carnival. Ashdale has been competing in this carnival for five years, winning first place every year in at least one year group. The Year 9/10 Academy students develop their knowledge and leadership through umpiring and coaching throughout these carnivals.
  • In Year 7, students attend the ‘Beach Games’. This is a team bonding exercise and introduction to the Academy at Sorrento beach.
  • In Year 8, students attend a West Australian Netball League (WANL) game on a Friday night to watch the best players in WA in the state league competition.
  • In Year 8, students participate in an Umpiring Course. They will use the skills learnt to umpire carnivals and games throughout their time in the Academy.
  • In Year 9, students attend the three-Day Camp at Coogee Discovery Park. They spend the three days playing against Netball Specialist Schools and team bonding with their class.
  • In Year 10, students will conduct Coaching Clinics with the Cluster Primary Schools. This is a six-week coaching clinic with all sessions planned and implemented by students.
  • In Year 10, students will also complete a 5-week fitness program at Competitive Boxing and Fitness in Malaga. This is an excellent opportunity to increase fitness before the start of the netball season.
  • In Year 10, students attend the five-day South West Tour. This is their final commitment to the Academy. The Tour consists of four to six netball games against schools in the South West and fun activities such as a high ropes course, archery and caving.
